Prince Edward Island's oldest heritage bookseller:
About Us
The Bookman has been in business as a new, used and rare bookstore, in some incarnation since the early 1970's. It began life in a three room house on Euston St. beside Taylor's Esso where the Canfield building stands today. It was P.E.I 's first used book store and one of The Islands first two bookstores. It sold predominately used books with a few remainders thrown in from time to time and provided a valuable buy/ sell service for Island book lovers. It remained at that location until 1990 when it was sold to the current owner and moved to a retail store front on Kent St. next to Ray's Hair Place and doubled in size.
In 1995 it doubled in size again and moved to the Currie building on Queen St. where it presently resides. It has evolved into an eclectic mix of quality new, used and rare books on a wide variety of subject matter. We endeavor to provide a wide selection of quality books at reasonable prices. The operative words here are "quality "and "affordable". We don't sell cheap books so if thats what you are looking for you would be best advised to try flea markets , yard sales etc. The new books are mainly publishers clearance or hurts which are new imperfect editions. In general these new books are 25- 60% off the Canadian retail price although there are exceptions to the rule. Used books are priced at market value.
Rare books are generally price below market value due to the fact that this is P.E.I. and not New York or London. We do appraisals for insurance purposes or replacement valuations. The charges for these services depend on the size and complexity of the job. We do not do valuations or guestimates over the phone due to the inherent inaccuracies in doing so.
Thank you for your patronage at The Bookman, Charles M Mills, Prop.
